Terraria and Minecraft are some of, if not, the most iconic games in the sandbox/survival genre. They both have fostered strong communities over the years with their fun and engaging gameplay through the sandbox creation aspects of them, and also the survival aspects of them. Obviously, terraria was inspired off of Minecraft to some extent, and this has caused a lot of people to compare both of the games (including me.) So, which game is better?
We’re going to go from category to category, comparing and contrasting both games when it comes to every aspect. The first one being creativity, and I think it’s safe to say that Minecraft easily takes the creativity aspect. Minecraft simply has more stuff to build, more stuff to build with, and just far more things that allow creativity than terraria. To be fair, terraria isn’t a slouch when it comes to this either, but it’s very clear that this wasn’t as much of a thought when making the game as it was for Minecraft.
If we’re comparing both survival modes, it’s complicated, to say the least. Thanks to the creativity you can have, Minecraft has a lot more longevity with individual worlds than terraria does, but terraria is overall more fun with its survival than Minecraft is, primarily with the bosses and foes you face during the matter. With both of these in mind, I’ll say that terraria gets the point in survival.
This was much less of a contest. Despite Minecraft having some iconic themes that could make a grown man cry, the game overall doesn’t have nearly as much iconic music as terraria does. Funnily enough, the theme for Terraria's overworld is a meme on the internet, that’s how iconic the music is. It’s no secret that Terraria takes the point in this.
This was kind of complicated. Minecraft’s Combat has always been, to say the least. Meanwhile, Terraria has far more fun options for combat against enemies. However, when compared to PVP (player vs player), Minecraft overall has the better system, even after the notorious combat update which made the PVP a lot more boring than previously. However, since you’re most likely PVEing more than you’re PVPing in both games, I’ll give the cake to Terraria.
This wasn’t kind of complicated though. Terraria overall has far better progression overall than minecraft throughout the entire game. Minecraft is a lot more simplistic, which is fine, but terraria has many different options to progress through the game and also a lot more stuff to do throughout the game. There’s a reason why a speedrun of terraria takes up to an hour, while a speedrun of Minecraft takes less than 10 minutes.
This is also counting servers online, but even if we weren’t, it wouldn’t be a contest. Minecraft easily outclasses terraria in multiplayer and servers. The countless amount of servers that have been made surrounding Minecraft give it endless playability, no matter what version (Bedrock or Java) you’re playing on. Terraria unfortunately doesn’t have anything similar to this, so Minecraft easily takes the cake here.
Finally, the modability of both games will be the final point counted. This is also a complicated category to judge. Terraria has a built in app called “Tmodloader” in order to get mods easily, so Terraria mods are overall more accessible. It’s also easy to do this in multiplayer as well, and some of the terraria mods can completely change the way you play the game. However, the same can be said for Minecraft, and if anything, the best Minecraft mods are far greater than the best terraria mods. However, downloading mods for singleplayer and especially multiplayer on minecraft is a lot more difficult than on Terraria. However, since it’s still very much possible, and because you have the power of the internet on your side, I’ll give the mod category to Minecraft.
Both games are great and have been a part of many people’s childhoods, but overall, Terraria wins the comparison here thanks to its focus on survival, it’s accessibility, it’s combat, and progression.
